Double at Frostbite opener leaves Cox in command of Welland Yacht Club series

Alan Cox made a flying start to Welland Yacht Club’s Frostbite Series with two wins at Sunday’s opener.

Four boats took to the start, with the Laser of Mark Holland leading the way closely followed by Alan Cox (also Laser), Andy Agar (OK) and Katie Follington (Laser Radial).

As they made their way up river Cox moved into first place, with Agar second and Holland third. Follington, meanwhile, was still trying to remain within handicap distance at the back.

Once around the top mark, Holland managed to gain second place. The order remained as they started the second lap.

With Follington still within handicap distance, Cox maintained his lead to be first across the line followed by Holland and then Agar only a second behind.

Follington was back in fourth, but handicap saw her climb up to second behind winner Cox. Agar also leapfrogged Holland to take third.

The course was made slightly longer – but for only one lap – for the second race and again Holland raced ahead at the start, followed by Cox and Agar, with Follington deciding the cold was getting the better of her and retiring.

As they made their way up river Cox took the lead. Then, on the run to the top mark, Holland positioned himself to have right of way around the mark regaining first place with Agar close behind in third.

During the race back down river Cox again moved ahead from Holland, then Agar.

The positions would remain to the finish and once handicaps applied, giving Cox his second win with Holland second and Agar third.
