Donington school pupils remember

More than 300 students from Donington’s Thomas Cowley High School came together to create their own Remembrance Poppy image to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

The idea came when deputy head, Mr Andy, went to see his football team, Barnsley County play Sheffield. The fans created something similar in the stands.

The image was created by the students holding up a coloured piece of paper at an angle.

Headteacher Martyn Taylor said: ‘It has always been an important part of the Thomas Cowley High School tradition that we come together as a school community to remember those students who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

“Each year on November 11 their names are read out by students in an act of remembrance.

“In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One we have created a giant poppy at the front of the school as a special addition to our remembering this year.

“I am always moved by the way that our students honour the sacrifice of those who came before them.”
