Derby clash the highlight as Spalding Town Tennis Club get their season under way

Spalding Tennis Club’s teams began their Peterborough and District League campaigns this week.

With it being a Bank Holiday Monday, Spalding’s A team weren’t in action and have to wait until next week to start their campaign back in Division One for the first time in five years.

Spalding B opened their season away at Stamford in Division Two, losing 6-3 in a closely-fought. The hosts won three sets 7-6.

Carl Newell, Mike Sitch, Jack Howard, Dave Baldwin, Martin Perkins and Joe Gill made up the team.

Spalding C and Spalding D faced each other in an inter-club clash in Division Three, with the C side prevailing 6-3.

Michael and Mathew Pearl, Andy Rix, Steve Knight, Joe Gill and Ian Argent turned out for the C team, with Ben, Millie and Martin Brittain, George Taylor, Gavin Staite and John Lees represented the D side.

  • Spalding’s season has officially started and the club welcome anyone looking to play tennis, with experience not an issue.

The following memberships are available: Adult (18-70) £104; Family (two adults and two juniors £216); Senior (over-70) £64; Junior (under-10 years) £22; Junior (over-14 years) £38; Junior (under-18 years) £54; Junior (full time student) £54; Social (non-playing) £10.

The club also has two taster days in place over the coming months, with all welcome.

Non-members are invited to the two British Tennis open days on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, July 21 (1pm-4.30pm).

Both days include free coaching, general play and fun games.

As for members, Sunday, July 7 sees the Mary Burgess Cup (1pm start). This is a round robin tournament that sees a junior paired with an adult.

The Chairman’s Cup mixed doubles is also on the horizon, while the club offers competitive tennis in both local leagues and with inter-club matches.
