Debut strike from Newman secures Tulips a win as Tigers lose FA Cup replay

Jake Newman’s debut goal fired Spalding United to a 1-0 win at Daventry Town on Tuesday night, while Holbeach United’s fine run in the Emirates FA Cup ended with a 2-0 defeat at Worcester City.

Starting with the Tulips, Newman – signed from Wellingborough Town earlier in the day – marked his debut with a 26th-minute effort to settle a tight Evo-Stik League First Division South showdown.

The victory is Spalding’s first on the road in the league this season and moves them up to seventh

Holbeach, meanwhile, couldn’t quite replicate Saturday’s FA Cup heroics as they eventually succumbed 2-0 at higher-graded Worcester.

Daniel Nti’s 25-yard drive in the first half and a second-half volley from former Jamaica international Deon Burton accounted for the Tigers, with not even hero keeper Ricky Drury able to save them this time.

More from both matches in the morning.
