Debut double for Sergeant as Pinchbeck United make Sawtry success look easy

New signing Tom Sergeant marked his Pinchbeck United debut with two goals as they thrashed Sawtry 7-0 in the ChromaSport PDFL Premier Division on Saturday.

The ex-Holbeach United and Sleaford Town attacker, who had been unattached, notched twice in the first half at Knight Street – and would have had a hat-trick but for missing an open goal.

The other Pinchbeck goals came from player/boss Ian Dunn (2), Tony Edwards, Nick Bishop and Liam Ogden in what was their biggest league win of the season so far.

Dunn handed a debut to new keeper Jack Ashton, but the United chief admitted that he didn’t have much to do.

“Sawtry look a different side to the one we played in November,” admitted the player/boss. “I think they’re struggling to get a team out, which you never like to see.

“To be honest, 7-0 flattered them a bit. Tom missed an open goal, I had one cleared from clearly behind the line and we had a stone-wall penalty turned down.

“But that’s all by the by. The plan before the game was to improve the goal difference and keep a clean sheet.

“We did both of those things and more, so I’m very happy.

“We’ve now got three tough away games in a row against Deeping Reserves, ICA Sports and Thorney.

“If we can win them then we’ll be knocking on the door of the top two.

“A lot of the leading sides still have to play each other, so all we can do is keep on winning and do our best to capitalise.”

The win leaves Pinchbeck fourth, seven points off second place with two games in hand.

They visit Deeping Rangers Reserves tonight (Wednesday, 7.30pm).

Pinchbeck: Ashton, Leggett, A Murrell, B Murrell, Bishop, Gardner, Francis, Ogden, Sergeant, Edwards, Dunn. Subs used: Brown, Dickinson, Runnalls.
