Debra and Tricia earn narrow Invitation Day victory at Spalding Golf Club

The Ladies’ Invitation Day at Spalding Golf Club was won by Debra Ward and her guest Tricia Sharpe.

The pair scored 37 points in the 3/4 handicap format to edge top spot by just one point.

Anne Ellis and her partner Sheila Dugmore came second with 36 points, beating Claire Rylott and partner Yvonne Schaffarczyk on countback.

Fourth and fifth places were also separated on countback with Sue Watson and partner Val Aspland edging out Hannah Thorold and Anne Hughes after both scored 35 points.

Among the ladies receiving golf balls for birdies were Spalding players Elaine Hancock, Mags Filby, Ruth Atkins, Maria Williamson and Lesley Williams.

  • Spalding Golf Club’s Ladies’ Club Trophy final was contested between Jenny Pipe (26 handicap) and Margaret Barkway (27).

The matchplay format started in April and the two finalists had a very close match.

Barkway took the early lead and was 2up after three holes. But Pipe hit back on the fourth and the pair were all square after nine holes at Surfleet.

A couple of holes changed hands, but again, they were all square after 13 holes. Then Barkway took command with wins on the 14th, 15th and 16th to win by a 3&2 margin.

  • The Ladies’ Past Captains competition was played over 13 holes at the Surfleet course – with Angela Roper coming through on top with 28 points ahead of Paula Brown in second place with 26 points.

Prizes were given and presented by the immediate past captain Jenny Wilson.

  • Some excellent scores were recorded in Spalding Golf Club ladies’ section’s September Medal, with Hannah Thorold’s nett 69 taking her to the top of the leaderboard.

A two-shot handicap reduction to 26 was her reward, as well as being the overall winner and gold medal qualifier.

Junior Tilly Garfoot’s excellent nett 71 earned her a one shot reduction to 25 and she took the bronze prize.

Paula Brown was awarded the silver division prize with a nett 77, while Jackie Bailey-Scott was also under par with a nett 73.
