Deaf woman knocked down by pavement cyclist in Spalding

A deaf woman who was knocked over by a cyclist on the pavement is calling for police to do more to stop it.

The Spalding pensioner, who has asked not to be named, was walking through the Pied Calf Yard when she was hit by a cyclist.

She said: “There were two men on bikes cycling along the pavement.

“They just came out of nowhere and I’m deaf so I couldn’t hear them.

“One of them ploughed into me and knocked me down. I thought I’d broken my hip but it turned out it was just badly bruised.

“To be fair to them they stopped to apologise and stayed with me until the ambulance and police arrived. It was an accident but they shouldn’t have been on the pavement.

“It took the police half an hour to come and just as the policewoman arrived another cyclist on the pavement rode straight past her and she didn’t say a word to him.

“It’s illegal to cycle on the pavement and it’s a big problem in Spalding town centre.

“I would really like to see the police doing more to stop this. They should be handing out fines at least.”

The woman, who works as a volunteer in the Sense charity shop on Station Street, said a few days later she was walking out of the shop when she was nearly knocked down again.

She added: “I would like to thank everyone who stopped to help me the day of the accident.

“Someone fetched me a chair and lots of people waited with me until the ambulance arrived.

“I had come into town on the bus and several people offered to give me a lift home, which was very kind of them.”

Spalding Inspector Jim Tyner said: “I have no current plans for further enforcement days because I have to prioritise the tasks for my limited resources.

“While I am not tasking my officers with specific road safety operations, I have an expectation that all officers who come across illegal cycling or driving deal with that issue as part of their routine police work.”
