‘Days of action’ on daytime cycling and driving in Spalding’s Market Place

“Days of action” are being planned by police amid continued complaints of motorists flouting the weekday pedestrianisation order in Spalding’s Market Place.

Vehicles are banned from driving in the area from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, but during the lockdowns more people have taken to driving through from Broad Street as well as parking in spaces and along the road side.

It’s particularly proved to be a problem on Tuesdays and Saturdays when Spalding Market takes place which has led to South Holland District Council putting up a new sign on those days informing motorists not to come through.

The Spalding and Civic District Society has publicly thanked the authority for putting the sign up but has urged it to be there every day the order is in place.

“Why is there no enforcement?,” a spokesman for the society said, quoting the fact there were between ten and 16 cars in the area when they were last in the area.

Lincolnshire Police says it’s planning the “days of action” to target motorists flouting the order and also targeting cycling offences.

Police Sergeant Rick Mosley, South Holland Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We are aware there appears to be an increase in the number of breaches of the TRO (traffic regulation order) which places restrictions on vehicles entering the Market Place between certain times of the day, depending on the day of the week and market days – with certain exceptions.

“The Neighbourhood Policing Team have continued to patrol the town centre frequently and deal with any offences they come across throughout the pandemic.

“As a result of the recent concerns raised over these breaches, we are planning some days of action where officers will be in the town centre to target vehicle and cycling offences.”
