Date set for Castle Sports Centre work

Work is to start on Spalding’s Castle Sports Complex next month with the ‘dry side’ to close on Tuesday, September 9.

South Holland District Council say a new temporary gym at Boston College’s campus in Red Lion Street will then open on Saturday, September 13.

That’s despite the authority having not yet granted itself a change of use planning permission for the gym.

No objections have been raised to that application.

It comes after the council voted through an extra £2.83m of funding behind closed doors recently so the £28m project can go ahead.

The majority, £20m, will come from a ‘Levelling Up’ government grant.

Last week the district council sent out an email to all Castle Sports Complex users confirming the dates with the opening times remaining the same despite the change of venue.

The email states: “The temporary facility at Boston College, Red Lion Quarter, Spalding will offer a wide range of cardiovascular, resistance equipment and free weights, a dedicated group exercise studio and spin studio and changing rooms and shower facilities

“The Swimming Pool (at Castle Sports) will remain open and fully operational throughout the duration of this development project.”

Coun Gary Taylor, SHDC’s project sponsor, said: “I’m delighted that we can deliver this bold and ambitious project for the people of South Holland, and bring the high-quality leisure, sport, and wellbeing facilities that our district so badly needs – now and for many generations to come.

“This redevelopment is about empowering and encouraging our residents to live healthier, more active lives together, and I can think of no better or more impactful way to invest in our future.

“This project can be a catalyst for real, lasting change, and I can’t wait to see the next stage of these exciting plans get underway.”

Coun Nick Worth, leader of SHDC, said: “Opportunities for investment of this size and ambition are not historically common for places like Lincolnshire, and I am proud of the work we have done to secure this funding and now to take another serious step towards making it a reality.

“As a result of the government funding, local taxpayers are effectively getting a brand new facility for just £8million, which is really good value for money.

“This is about more than bricks and mortar – it’s about investing in the future of South Holland and giving everyone in our district the chance to thrive physically, mentally and socially.”
