A surfer spent five hours on Spalding’s waterways to highlight the work of a marine conservation and campaigning charity.
With waves at a premium on the River Welland and Coronation Channel, Darryn Allen used his surfboard to paddle his way to promoting the message last Saturday (July 30).
He entered the water at Welland Yacht Club’s base and went through to the town centre, before turning around, going along the Coronation Channel to Fulney Bridge and returning to the yacht club.
And en route he raised more than £500 for Surfers Against Sewage.
Darryn (38), of Surfleet, said: “It took me just under five hours. I was lucky with the currents and the weather was on my side.
“I raised a lot of money and, as for awareness on the day, there weren’t that many people about apart from a few dog walkers, which was a shame.”
Darryn, who surfs at Cromer and East Runton in Norfolk about six times a year and Cornwall once or twice, was supported by several family members and Spalding firefighters who did a riverbank litter-pick and money collection.
He also thanks Spalding Water Taxi, Castle Sports Complex and the yacht club.
