Damage is caused as destructive Sunday storm batters South Holland

Strong winds and heavy rain battered South Holland on Sunday morning with the area having been in the path of a particularly strong storm meteorologists say may have contained some tornadoes.

It left a path of destruction around 20km to 30km wide from Dorset to south Lincolnshire, with South Holland getting gusts up to 70mph.

A number of roads were blocked by fallen trees while disruption on the railway line between Spalding and Peterborough continued into Monday morning leading to services being cancelled.

BBC meteorologist Dan Holley said it was down to a “curl of rain wrapping around a small area of low pressure”.

“Most of us saw straight line winds, this is what happens when you get very strong winds high up in the atmosphere get brought down to the ground when you’ve got heavy rain.

“You still can get little spin ups, small localised tornadoes mixed in with this much larger field of wind damage.

“It’s going to be difficult to say which parts of the region saw straight line winds or tornado damage on Sunday morning.”
