Crisp idea helps move bike bid up a gear

A town’s crisp packet recycling scheme has earned enough money to buy the town new bike racks.

Since Holbeach Parish Council set up as a community hub for saving landfill and recycling used crisp packets, the scheme has attracted a number of residents and businesses alike to save their packets and drop them in to the Parish Council offices at West End.

The Walkers Crisps scheme sees packets collected, washed, shredded and then recycled into pellets to produce the likes of outdoor furniture.

In a move to be more environmentally friendly, earlier this year Coun Isobel Hutchinson proposed that the Parish Council Offices in Holbeach be a collection point. She said: “Since becoming one of the 8,500 recognised sites across the UK back in February of this year, the parish council has saved ten full waste bags of crisp packets from going into landfill and has enough money returned from the scheme to buy some bike racks for the town to help residents come out and use the High Street whilst reducing their carbon footprint and getting some exercise.

“It’s vital to the High Street to make it as accommodating as possible and with an environmentally conscious result from saving all those packets going into landfill, I think we are on to a real winner for the community.

“The proposed Holbeach Transport Strategy looks at giving a greener outlook on the way we travel and this scheme supports that in giving those residents who cycle somewhere to safely lock their bike when they pop into town. The only question is now, where would residents like to see the bike racks go to be able to make the most of them?”

The collection point for clean, empty packets is situated in the reception at Coubro Chambers, West End in Holbeach and packets from all crisp manufacturers are accepted.
