Cricket round-up: Naylor takes 5-53 as Spalding close on leaders, Newton hits 100 in abandoned clash

Spalding Town were the only side to register a win in the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division on Saturday as they kept their title charge alive.

Town are now just 18 points behind leaders Skegness with a game in hand after a four-wicket Seas End Hall success over Freiston on a day when rain wreaked havoc with the schedule.

The visitors won the toss and batted first, but were bowled out for only 151 in 39 overs as Will Naylor (5-53) and Harry DeCamps (3-36) shone with the ball.

Sunil Panjwani (33) top scored for Freiston, but Town were well on top as the sides switched around.

Despite a few wobbles in the reply, Ollie Dring (70), Ethan Lawrence (40 not out) and Jon Manton (26) all played nicely to ensure that Spalding reached 152-6 in 30.2 overs to secure a four-wicket victory and a maximum haul of 20 points.

With leaders Skegness seeing their game at Grantham 2nd abandoned, Spalding gained eight points on them and are now within striking distance when their game in hand comes around.

Elsewhere in the top flight, it was a frustrating day for Moulton Harrox.

They produced a superb batting performance against Market Deeping 2nd at Broad Lane, amassing 253-3 from their 45 overs before rain ended their hopes of victory before they’d bowled a ball in reply.

Indeed, Josh Newton made a super 100 not out on the day, as he enjoyed a great partnership with Jack Barnett (93).

The pair helped Harrox to maximum batting points, but both deserved to be on the winning side.

Even less play was possible at Paradise Field, with Long Sutton’s game against Sleaford 2nd lasting just 17 overs.

Hosts Sutton were struggling on 28-3 with Rhys Collings having snared 2-13 before the rain came.

In Division One, Spalding Town 2nd picked up maximum points as they defeated hosts Boston 3rd by 30 runs.

Batting first, strong knocks from Michael Morris (52), Barnaby Dring (42), Neo Timothy (31 not out) and George Morris (24) steered Spalding to 207-7 from their 45 overs.

Kevin Manning (64 not out) batted superbly in Boston’s reply, but they were all out for 177 in the 44th over as Thomas Decamps (2-25) and Harry Birch (2-22) impressed.

In the same division, Moulton Harrox 2nd were battered by 172 runs against Billingborough.

Dave Newman’s 164 not out steered hosts Boro to 231-3 declared in 26 overs, before Harrox were skittled for 59 in reply.

Saturday fixtures: SLBL (1pm): Premier Division – Long Sutton v Freiston; Moulton Harrox v Spalding Town. Division One – Spalding Town 2nd v Billingborough.
