Councillors may train as lifesavers using new device

Lives could be saved by a new piece of equipment installed at South Holland District Council offices.

Staff and councillors will now be given training to use the new defibrillator, which has been set up in the reception area of the council’s Spalding offices.

The defibrillator can help resuscitate people who have suffered sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
This occurs when the electrical rhythm that controls the heart is replaced by a chaotic disorganised rhythm called ventricular fibrillation.
A defibrillator works by emitting a high energy electric shock which restores the heart’s natural rhythm.

Many SCA victims can be saved if people nearby recognise what has happened, call the ambulance service quickly, perform basic chest compressions and use a defibrillator.

Coun Malcolm Chandler, portfolio holder for regulatory services, who helped install the defibrillator, said: “It is vitally important that we have this life saving equipment available and accessible at all times there are people in the building.
“The kit along with the defibrillator at the South Holland Centre will be available for use by trained people should it be needed by members of the public, adding to overall safety in the town.

“I am sure that many of our staff will take the opportunity to do the training.
“I would like to see this type of lifesaving equipment available in every village throughout the district.
“Hopefully, our staff will never be called upon to use it, but if they do it could help to save someone’s life.”
