Council says it’s working with M&Co on finding new premises

There’s hopes M&Co will stay in Spalding as South Holland District Council says it’s working with the shopping chain to find new premises.

A closing down sale began at the Bridge Street store last month which is due to shut its doors for the final time in mid-February.

Coun Christine Lawton asked council officers what they were doing for the store at a meeting of Spalding Town Forum this week.

“M and Co have been here in Spalding for many years,” she said. “When I spoke to the staff there they said they were very sad that the management were open to staying in town but they couldn’t find any suitable premises.

“I don’t know if it’s a case of the lease running out or why they are moving, but the staff were really hopeful the management would look at other premises.”

Town centre improvement co-ordinator Beth Stinson said: “We’ve an officer with our economic development team who is working with M and Co at looking at potential premises.

“They have been having conversations with the company and are working on it.”

Matthew Hogan the assistant director for strategic growth and development with the South and East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership was asked what the chances of M&Co staying were.

“They want to stay in the town and we’re working with them on finding options to keep them here and stay on our high street,” he said. “I can’t say what the chances are but we’re absolutely keen and don’t want to lose them as they’re an important part of what Spalding has to offer.”
