Council changes to plan to close Holbeach car park entrance

South Holland District Council officers have been forced to alter a proposal to close a car park entrance – following opposition from councillors and residents, and advice from other bodies.

The council will now do a trial closure of the Boston Road South entrance to Boston Road car park. It was to be the Park Road entrance.

A council spokesman said on Monday: “Having taken advice from partners we have decided to trial a closure of the Boston Road entrance to the car park, instead of the Park Road entrance. Signs will be going up this week and there will be a two-week notice period before the trial starts.
“The trial is being carried out following a recent survey which found a high number of cars using Boston Road car park as a cut through, often at speed which has obvious safety issues.
“To reach this decision advice from Lincolnshire County Council Highways Department and Holbeach Parish Council has been taken into account alongside SHDC’s own Health and Safety risk assessment, district councillors’ input and feedback from residents.”

Park Gardens resident Margaret Radcliffe was still not happy with the proposal.
“It’s a better idea but I still think it’s silly,” she said. “Everybody I have spoke to thinks it’s absolutely stupid.
“I think they should leave it as it is. I have lived here for three years and I have never heard of anyone having an accident.”

Mrs Radcliffe (78) believes the move will lead to further delays and frustration for motorists at the five-way traffic lights in Market Hill.

The move comes six months after another trial with the council switching the town’s market from High Street to the car park.
