Consistent Cobb claims PBS Salva success at Welland Yacht Cub

Brian Cobb won Welland Yacht Club’s PBS Salva Personal Handicap Regatta after seeing off five other boats.

Two wins from the three races, with one second place, was enough for overall victory for Cobb.

For personal handicap rounds, the boat class handicap was adjusted up or down according to ability.

Race one got under way with a reasonable breeze. Paul Burton took the early lead on the water from Cobb, closely followed by Andy Prior and Tom Bell in their Scorpion with two more double-handers, Lucy Burton and Neave in a Magno, Gail Follington and daughter Katie in a Pico and Mark Holland making up the fleet.

As they progressed up the course, Holland retired with a broken boom fixing. Burton maintained his lead on the water but, once the handicaps had been applied, Cobb won from Burton in second and Prior and Bell in third.

The wind increased for race two, with Holland able to return. With the gusts providing some surges in power, the downwind section would prove challenging with Holland finding himself in the water.

The win again went to Cobb ahead of Burton in second, with Prior and Bell taking third.

The start of race three passed without incident but, with the fleet now down to five. Burton again took the lead from Prior and Bell followed by Holland, Cobb and Lucy Burton and Neave. Once handicaps were applied Holland secured his first win of the day from Cobb, with Prior and Bell third once again.

In the overall standings Cobb was the winner, with Burton second and the potent pairing of Prior and Bell third.
