Comp claims from burst mains

A councillor is urging Spaling residents and business to make sure they get the compensation they’re entitled to ahead of future road closures.

Residents affected by the spate of burst water mains in the town three weeks ago are set to be given between £150 and £50 in compensation, depending on how long their water was off.

That’s according to Coun Mark Le Sage who addressed the Spalding Town Forum on Tuesday (September 30).

Businesses can also claim compensation, but they will have to do so themselves.

Coun Le Sage said he took to contacting Anglian Water for local businesses and residents because he’d heard about The Olive Tree restaurant on Francis Street having to close just days after opening.

He said the restaurant had a large booking from a health group which it had to turn away as a result of not having any water.

“They’ve received a form so they can apply for compensation,” he told the Spalding Town Forum. “If there are any businesses that did suffer, please can they write to me and I’ll forward them to Anglian Water’s network manager.

“Those claims will be processed separately. I’m happy to help any business that’s struggled.”

Large swathes of Spalding were left without water between September 3 and 5.

A main originally burst in Haverfield Road and attempts to divert water away from there while repairs took place led to three more bursts.

While Anglian Water carried out deliveries of bottled water, many residents were left without water for long periods and numerous businesses were forced to close.

Coun Le Sage also revealed that further work needs to be carried out involving road closures.

“There’s a valve missing that will mean extra work needs to be done on the road,” he said, not specifying which road he was referring to. “There will be a road closure.

“The valve has been covered over by Tarmac which is why we’ve had the difficulties we did.”

Signs advertising a road closure of Winsover Road from October 13 to 17 have been put up in the past week.

As The Voice went to press on Wednesday morning though it was unclear if this was the closure that Coun Le Sage was referring to.
