COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS: Try out wheelchair basketball – it’s fun!

by Jess Horn, community development officer at South Holland District Council

Maxton PaineLast week South Holland District Council in Partnership with Leisure in the Community and 1Life ran wheelchair basketball taster sessions.

The sessions were held at the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding and Peele Leisure Centre in Long Sutton as a part of the SHout and About competition.
The events were delivered by Lincolnshire Sport and a great time was had by everyone who attended.
The sessions were well attended and we are seeking funding to run them on a regular basis in South Holland.

Wheelchair basketball is an exceptionally fun sport, enabling disabled and non-disabled people to play the in same team, have a great time and enjoy the benefits of playing sport.

British Wheelchair Basketball explains the sport in this way: “Offering a great way to achieve all the health benefits of physical activity whilst also meeting new friends and team-mates in a fun environment, wheelchair basketball uses a class-ification system to enable people with a wide range of disabilities and those who are non-disabled to both enjoy and compete in the sport together.
“Indeed, at all levels of the sport – from grassroots to elite – every wheelchair basketball team is made up of players with a whole range of different physical abilities, with each player crucial to their team’s success.”
