Coelho’s late strike not enough to earn a point

Two away defeats in four days were hard to take for Holbeach United, after they had got their Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League season off to a winning start.

Wednesday saw them slip up 2-0 at Parson Drove, before they narrowly missed out in a best -of-five-goals game at Long Melford on Saturday.

The Tigers created plenty of chances at their local rivals in midweek but were unable to convert any. They conceded the opener after three minutes and Drove doubled their advantage with 17 minutes remaining.

Manager Callum Lawe made three changes to the starting line-up for Saturday’s trip to Suffolk and a tightly-contested first half saw the teams turn round level at 1-1 with the visitors’ strike coming when home goalkeeper Jack Lines deflected a corner into his own net.

A frustrating second half saw the hosts score twice more before Holbeach pulled a goal back in the closing stages when Denis Coelho capitalised on another goalkeeping error.

Tigers (at Parson Drove): French, Oldham, Hyde, Goult, Shenille, Roberts, Lee, Carter, Kacirek, Joof, O Williams. Subs: Wilkshire, Coelho, Garner, Buffong, J Williams.
Att: 110.
