South Lincs Competitive Swimming Club put in a fine performance as they finished joint third at the final National Arena Swimming League meet of the year.
The Spalding club travelled to Wellingborough to compete against swimmers from Lowestoft, Nottingham, Loughborough, Kimberley and the host club – and did lead the way for much of the meeting.
Throughout the night the team atmosphere was fantastic, almost electric at times, with some incredibly tight races adding to the excitement.
It always looked like being a close-run event – and after ten events South Lincs were in second place, with the relays providing a great start to the campaign.
Then it was into the individual races and the team began to take a hold on the gala, maintaining first place through the next checkpoints of scores.
It was tight, though, with only one or two points between the top four teams all night.
After a second round of relays, which included a couple of disqualifications for South Lincs, the team finished the night in joint third place – two points off second and only eight behind the winners.
The team were a little disappointed by the outcome having led all night, but head coach Callum Lawson took the positive.
He said: “We travelled with a number of swimmers missing due to illness and/or family commitments and had drafted some younger swimmers in to help out with our relays.
“Everybody stepped up to the plate and swam their hearts out. Each and every swimmer involved with our league performance this year should be truly proud of themselves.”
- Sunday night saw the ‘Learn 2 Swim’ children competing in the winter mini club championship gala at Spalding’s Castle Sports Complex pool.
This event gives the younger swimmers a chance to compete against each other, learning what competition is like and to have some fun as well.
- South Lincs member Luke Elliot has been selected by the East Midland ASA to travel to Luxembourg to compete at the 18th Euro Meet over the weekend of January 29-31.
The 16-year-old will be competing in five events over the weekend, with the event part of the regional ASA’s talent development programme.
