A Holbeach church is marking the 40th anniversary of its building this weekend ahead of a celebratory flower festival next month.
Holbeach Methodist Church’s premises on Albert Street opened four decades ago this weekend in 1986 after fundraising by the community.
A church has been on the site since February 1854 when it was a Wesleyan Reform Chapel.
One of those serving the church then was a 23-year-old Rev William Booth who went on to found The Salvation Army. He was in the area for an 18-month spell.
When the old chapel needed renovation, it was felt building a whole new one would be cheaper.
It was opened on April 19, 1986 by Peter Cunnington alongside a dedication by Rev Alan Davies, the chairman of the district.
Mr Cunnington remains a member of the congregation and is set to be involved in the service of thanksgiving being led by Rev Alan Barker on Sunday at 3pm.
There will be light refreshments following the service.
The main attraction though will be a 40th anniversary Flower Festival to take place from Friday to Sunday, May 15 to 17.
Using the theme ‘Our Story, Our Song’ a host of displays have been created to mark they building’s anniversary as part of the festival.
A spokesman for Holbeach Methodist Church said: “When Rev Angy Long, the chairman of Lincolnshire District, invited contributions from individuals and churches to demonstrate this theme, she did not envisage such a variety of wonderful creations.
“The testimonies and stories that accompany the pieces are equally as inspiring and moving.
“The exhibition of amazing art, craft, sculpture and poetry will be on tour around the district over the spring and summer but we are delighted that it will be displayed here at Holbeach Methodist Church throughout the flower festival weekend.
“This will incorporate wonderful floral arrangements in our beautiful chapel alongside displays of historical information about the current church building and its predecessor.
“Refreshments will be served across the three days and we look forward to welcoming you to share our special occasion.”
The festival will be open 12pm to 4pm on May 15 and 17 and 10am to 4pm on the Saturday in between.
