Long Sutton manager Matt Cawthorn had to give his fellow players a shot across the bows before seeing them win 2-1 at Langtoft United Reserves.
There looked to be a bit of lethargy about preparations at the Division One’s bottom side but what he said seemed to do the trick.
Sutton were ahead within five minutes thanks to a clever finish from 17-year-old Josh Lawrence, who was man of the match.
Cawthorn himself pounced on a defensive mix-up to make it 2-0, but Sutton were made to sweat a little for the final 15 minutes after conceding a penalty which the hosts converted.
Cawthorn said: “It had a typical end of season feel to the game.
“Our warm-up was poor and I certainly let the lads know that before we kicked off but we came out of the blocks fast.”
