Long Sutton cue ace Mick Cooper is celebrating the finest achievement of his career after becoming English Over-60s billiards champion.
Cooper, who turned 60 in December, beat fellow Spalding and District Billiards League player Mick Johnson by two points in the semi-final before edging out Brian Harvey 146-141 in the battle for top honours at Clay Cross in Derbyshire on Sunday.
“Mick has worked very hard to progress his game over the three years I’ve been coaching him,” said widely respected tutor and player Philip Welham of Norfolk County Billiards and Snooker Association.
“He deserves every credit for the positive way he has gone about this.
“I am sure everyone who knows Mick will wish him congratulations on this excellent achievement.”
Former footballer Cooper – a well-known local striker for Holbeach St Marks among others during his playing days – has won a string of cue honours over the last couple of years but this success is by far his finest.
