Captains win Ryder Cup

Whilst across the pond at Bethpage Black the USA and Europe fought out a fractious second day in the Ryder cup, at Tydd St Giles Golf Club 36 players fought out their version, with an outcome much more friendly and enthralling than the professionals could muster.

With players divided into a captains’ team and a management team, the competition is played as nine holes of Foursomes followed by 18 holes of singles matchplay.

A strong morning session from the captains’ team saw them pull out a 6-3 lead which was just a taster for what was to culminate in an exciting afternoon.

The management team staged a resilient fight back which saw the score tied at 13-13 with just one match left on the course.

In a fitting culmination to a great day’s golf, the captains’ team secured the 14-13 win with a par on the 18th green.

Other results: Seniors’ Stableford Division 1 – 1st Jason Farmer with 36 points, 2nd (ocb) Chris Moore 35 points, 3rd Peter Williams 35 points, division 2 – 1st Barry Jones with 40 points, 2nd Mel Churchman 39 points, 3rd Hank Pooley 38 points, division 3 – 1st Terry Ribbens with 43 points, 2nd Bill Boyce 38 points, 3rd (ocb) Joe Connolly 37 points.
