AIMING FOR THE TOP: Spalding lad Chris Whitton is showing great promise on the karting scene.

Talented Spalding teenager Chris Whitton is dreaming of a career in Formula 1 after excelling on the local karting scene.

The 14-year-old Sir John Gleed School pupil has been racing since the age of five and has made waves at every single level he’s competed at.

Some of the best years of his embryonic racing career have been spent in the Little Green Man Championship, which is for racers aged between seven and 13. That saw Chris travel all around the country, racing a venues such as Rowrah, Beckles, Newark and Kimbolton.

In his first year in the championship the youngster was 12th, before he progressed to a fine fifth last time around.

That saw Chris elevated into the Tag Heuer Junior TKM British Karting Championship and put him in a much faster kart. He’s now sitting in second place overall at Kimbolton Kart Club – setting the fastest lap at Wilton Mill Kart Club along the way.

But rising costs are putting his development at risk, leaving proud dad Mick Whitton with no choice but to ask for a bit of local support.

He said: “I’m always out and about with Chris. It’s expensive and hard work, but that’s what dads are for!

“For the next level up, you’re talking £1,000 a meeting really. The cost of entry, fuel, tyres and wear and tear is getting more each year.

“We want to support Chris, racing is his life. His ambition is certainly to do something in racing. He’s not just a racer, he’s a good mechanic too.

“His absolute dream would be to get himself on the Formula 1 grid in some way. Be it a racer or one of the pit crew, he’d just love it.”
