Camm combination make a slice of history at Spalding

Father and son partnership John and Steve Camm completed a unique double at Spalding Golf Club last week.

In what was the last of the summer knockout finals at the Surfleet course, the Camms defeated Chris Ward and Mike Yould 3&2 to add the Baker Bowl trophy to the Holmes trophy they won recently.

The size of their achievement should not be underestimated, as no pairing in the club’s recent history has won both of the major trophies in the same year.

The betterball matchplay final saw both pairs exchanging early holes – and it was all square at the turn.

Ward and Yould briefly edged in front after winning the tenth, but the Camms then won the next four holes between them and held firm with halves at the 15th and 16th to win 3&2.

The losing semi-finalists were Joe Slater and Sean Stewart and Paul Coddington and Richard Laud.

  • A Spalding social team enjoyed a convincing 6-0 win against Rutland County in the last inter-club match of the season at the Surfleet course.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Edward Brand and Mark Jones, Phil Tweddell and Joe Slater, Mark Crozier and Wayne Flowers, Stuart Parker and Matthew Richardson, Calum Lewis and Dave Perrott and Gerald Cox and Barry Hutson.

  • Club member David Bergmann (26 handicap) holed out with a driver on the 196-yard par three sixth hole at the Surfleet recently while playing with friends. It was his second hole in one and was achieved almost five years ago to the day, using the same club – at the same hole.
  • The annual challenge match between the Drovers team and the Hillbillies resulted in a 10-8 win for the Drovers.

Best performances for Pete Gooderson’s Drovers team came from Mike Crampton and John Camm (9&7), David Bark and Martin Spenceley (5&4), Monty Brittain and Allan Pritchard (4&3) and Robert Norman and Rod Hunt (6&5). Strong showings from Pete Williams’ Hillbillies team came from Vince Ward and Dave Harvey (7&5), Roy Young and Keith Feary (5&4), Bob Sutton and Bob Pearson (5&3) and Andy Ladbrook and Allan Singer (5&3).
