Calls for more dog areas in district

There have been calls for more areas in South Holland where dog walkers can take their pets off leads.

District councillors have said they would like to see more of such areas.

The debate came about in a discussion of a proposal to ban dogs from enclosed children’s play parks as part of a proposed new Public Spaces Protection Order.
It led to Coun Rob Gibson telling South Holland District Council’s Performance Development Panel: “There is a lack of off-lead dog walking areas within the district.
“I know people who used to bring their dogs to the old tennis courts at Ayscoughfee.
“They’d close the door, throw the ball and there would be dogs running all over it.
“The council have now done a fantastic job on upgrading them and making them fit for use for tennis again.
“But those dog owners seem to have limited places for the good and responsible dog walkers.”
Coun James Le Sage backed the calls and said he’d already had a discussion about opening them.
“I do think it would be a good thing and is something we should look at.
“I did ask Coun Henry Bingham if we could find an area, and the person who contact me asked if it could be an area in Ayscoughfee.”
Donna Hall, SHDC’s group manager for public protection, told the meeting most of the enclosed children’s play areas which would be covered by the legislation would be too small to let dogs run around in anyway, but creating off-lead dog areas was something that the district council could look into in the future.
