Call goes out for cadets

Young people are again being invited to join the Spalding Police Cadets.

Sessions are held at Spalding Police Station from 7pm to 8pm every Wednesday.

Recent ones have involved gaining an understanding of using police radios, taking statements and stop and search.

Outside sessions have included visits to museums, custody suites and ‘scenario days’.

Cadets have also taken part in community events such as Spalding Flower Parade, Armed Forces Day and remembrance events.

Georgia Pengelly, Lincolnshire Police’s volunteer co-ordinator, said: “We believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background, gender, disability, sexual orientation or ability and provides the opportunity for young people to engage with Lincolnshire Police.

“We encourage young people from all backgrounds to join, including those who may be vulnerable to crime or social exclusion.”

Cadets can join between the ages of 13 and 16 but can stop on until 18. They must either live or attend school within Lincolnshire.

Retired chief inspector Jim Tyner is now one of the volunteer cadet leaders at Spalding Police Cadets.

He said: “We aim to make cadets fun and informative.

“I recently received a message from a former cadet who is now a front-line police officer who said ‘I’m where I am today because of you’. That’s very humbling and rewarding’.

“Not every cadet wants to join the police, but being a police cadet gives them life-skills about decision-making and dealing with challenging situations.”
