Burtons set the early pace in Frostbite Series with victory in opening round

Paul and Lucy Burton made a flying start to Welland Yacht Club’s Frostbite Series as they took top spot at round one on Sunday.

With a strong wind and cold temperatures forecast only four boats took to the starting line.

The powerful Phantom of Gerrit Van Haren pulled away on the first leg to the first mark, but he capsized before reaching the downwind buoy.

This gave the father and daughter team of Paul and Lucy Burton (Graduate) the chance to gain the lead.

Brother and sister duo Andy and Emma Dodson, who are in their first season of sailing having gained their RYA level two sailing qualification at the Spalding club this year, followed on in one the clubs Magnos.

They managed to almost complete one of the two laps before retiring.

Meanwhile, Paul and Lucy Burton also capsized at the final gybe mark but managed to cross the line to claim first place.

Welland will be racing at 11.30am every Sunday right up to Christmas, with the Brass Monkey ending the season on Boxing Day.
