Burton and Cox take Welland Yacht Club titles despite skipping their finale

Two series champions were crowned at Welland Yacht Club on Sunday with both the Sunday Points and Personal Handicap series coming to a close.

Paul Burton got his hands on the Sunday Points crown, while Alan Cox was the victor in the Personal Handicap series.

With a cold start, just four boats took to the start for the Sunday Points finale.

From the off the three boats of Andy Prior and crew Tom Bell, Gail Follington and Geri van Haren were equally matched – followed by junior Katie Follington.

Prior and Bell then pulled out a lead once they could deploy their spinnaker.

Although they managed to keep the lead on the water, it wasn’t enough once handicaps had been added.

That meant Gail Follington was the winner ahead of Prior and Bell in second, with van Haren third.

However, the overall results still saw Burton take the series victory from Cox second.

With the cold wind biting, only three took to the start for the penultimate Personal Handicap race.

Prior and Bell again pulled out a lead with the aid of their spinnaker, but Follington managed to keep within handicap and again took the win from Prior and Bell, with van Haren third once again.

The same trio would line up for the final race, but this time van Haren got a flying start and was able to open the gap enough to maintain it to give him the win from Follington in second, with Prior and Bell back in third.

Once again this didn’t affect the winner, as this time it was Cox who claimed the series win from Follington in second.
