Buffham sets the bar in Spalding Cycling Club’s old school challenge event

The always exciting one-off Drop Bar Challenge event was contested by Spalding Cycling Club members last week.

After a cancellation the previous week due to the incredibly warm weather, Spalding CC returned to their standard Pode Hole ten-mile course for the event.

This event takes riders back to the old days of racing before the days of aero bars, aero helmets, skin suits and deep rim wheels.

Indeed, the challenge sees riders take on the usual course on their road bikes and without the aerodynamic benefits of modern equipment.

This year it was Kieran Buffham who took home a great win with a time of 22.22mins.

He was followed home by Tom Wright in second place, with Frazer Wallis completing the podium in third.

However, the real excitement was in the battle for seventh place – which was fought out by six riders who all placed within a minute of each other.

It ws Dan Warner who took the spoils with a time of 26 minutes.

He led home Gerry Charlwood (26.07mins) who was two seconds head of Tom Drew. Agonizingly for Mark Hills, he was only one second behind the time set by rival Drew.
