Brilliant Burton seals Welland Yacht Club’s Frostbite Series title with a race to spare

Paul Burton clinched overall glory in Welland Yacht Club’s Frostbite Series victory with one race still to contest after a solid second place on Sunday.

Although there was little wind, 12 people in nine boats still took part in the penultimate race of the popular winter series.

It was Alan Cox and Roger Ackroyd in the RS200 who made the best from the start and took an early lead – which they wouldn’t lose.

Series leader Burton got stuck in mid-fleet at the start, but managed to work his way into second place, although ever mindful of the handicap difference which would be applied.

The race continued without incident with Cox and Ackroyd taking the win from Burton in second, with Dave Sauntson third and Andy Prior and crew Tom Bell fourth.

Although Burton has sealed the title, Boxing Day’s final race results do count on their own for the Brass Monkey trophy.

Welland YC would like to wish all who have supported them this season a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
