Brennans bounce back to put skids on the leaders

Another fantastic evening of football in The Spalding and South Holland Voice six-a-side league saw a mixed-bag of high-scoring games and 0-0 shutouts as teams battled through the blustery winds at Surfleet’s Glen Park.

Division One got under way with Old Boy Coaches suffering a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Univeg Team, who halted their recent run of poor form. The game was tight and compact in the opening exchanges – and it wasn’t until Univeg found the breakthrough that they were able to exert any control on the game.

It’s a victory which keeps Univeg firmly in the title-chasing pack, with Armando Pires named man-of-the-match (MOTM).

You’ve Got No Fans then made it five games unbeaten with an impressive 5-0 shutout against Pinchbeck United.

Andrew Baker was afforded MOTM by referee Matt Jackson, but the whole team were in great form.

Then came the big game of the night, as last season’s top two – Brennans Sports and Polishborough – squared off. Things have altered slightly this time around as Brennan’s sit mid-table while the Poles runaway with the league.

However, they played out a frosty 0-0 draw which Brennans will be the happier with. Cameron Cope was given MOTM in this one.

The next clash saw Wet Dream Team’s poor run of form continue, as they went down 6-1 to hard-working Notinmymums Forest.

Dream Team now sit just one-point above the drop-zone, amid rumours of them folding. Brendan Taylor was picked as MOTM.

One side on the up are Pro Ballers, who bounced back from their heavy defeat last week to take a 3-1 win against bottom-side EPH Allstars.

An organised and solid approach to their pacey, pass-and-move style of play was enough to see Pro Ballers home, with Declan Earth taking the MOTM spoils.

The final game in the top tier saw Posh Old Boys find themselves with an unexpected lead against second-placed Baltic United, only to crumble under their intense attacking pressure and eventually lose the game 9-4 in the highest scoring game of the night.

Edgaras Buzas, recently called up the Lithuanian national side, was yet again in deadly form in front of goal and picked up the MOTM prize along the way.

The win puts Baltic just one point behind leaders Polishborough.

Division Two kicked off with a heavyweight clash between top two Evolution and Simple FC.

In what was a thoroughly engrossing tie watched by a decent crowd, Simple extended their lead to three points with a refined 2-0 victory. Pat Issitt was given the nod for MOTM, but a number of Simple players could have taken the accolade.

The next game showcased Harry Ledger, of Le Saux Solid Crew, who was called up to attend trials for the England national six-a-side team this week. He celebrated with yet another MOTM show as Le Saux were held to a 1-1 draw with Goaldiggers.

The TBME then overturned a 3-1 deficit to eventually run out 5-3 winners against Balotellitubbies, thanks largely to an immense second-half performance.

Balo’ keeper Max Crowley and four-goal TBME ace Jake Farrell were the stars, with the latter the MOTM.

Big winners of the week were Sarah’s Boys, who recorded a comfortable 6-0 win over bottom-side Ultra D. Ash Graham, Joe Martin and Cameron Walker were the stand-out performers.
Graham grabbed MOTM.

The penultimate match in Division Two saw BK’s Athletic hold on to record a 3-2 win over Mail Carters, with Liam Ford picking up another MOTM prize.

Dynamo Kiev then closed the night with a rare win as they ended a seven-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over downtrodden Tekkerslovakia. Alex Sowerby was given MOTM.
