Shotokan Tokon Karate Club duo Jason Partridge and Francesca Rivett are celebrating after both were successfully awarded their shodan (black belt).
The two students, along with six other members of the Long Sutton club, attended an all-grades national training course with Sensei Ohta (7th dan, Chief Instructor of Japan Karate Association England) at Hatfield University Sports Centre.
There was a three-hour training session focusing on both kumite (sparring) and kata (form). Grading then took place with Sensei Ohta, where students were examined on their execution and understanding of techniques, kata and kumite.
Due to the small numbers of people taking their grading examination on this day, Partridge (age 14) and Rivett (15) found themselves facing each other in the kumite exam.
Both demonstrated good spirit and commitment, and gave each other no quarter, ensuring they were both successfully awarded their shodan.
Shotokan Tokon Karate train at the Peele Leisure Centre in Long Sutton on Mondays and Thursdays at 7pm.
They also meet at Northgate Sports Hall in Sleaford, Tuesday nights at 6.30pm.
