Billiards round-up: Top Spalding and District League trio impress with big breaks

Three of the Spalding and District Billiards League’s leading players made impressive breaks on a quality night of action on Monday.

The best break of the evening came from the league’s most heavily-handicapped player, Rob Childs (O250).

He reeled off scores of 73, 61, 45, 32 and an unfinished 30 in Crowland B’s 5-2 home success over Donington.

That helped Childs to a frame success over Jim Thompson (R40), with team-mate Paul Holland (R60) then defeating Nigel Brasier to round off the victory.

Also impressing on the night were Mick Cooper (O190) and Mick Johnson (O180), as the duo’s teams clashed.

Long Sutton’s Cooper made breaks of 55, 42, 37 and 32 in the opening frame – but was beaten 200-133 by Jason Rose (R40).

Amazingly, Consti B’s Johnson was also beaten in the second frame despite reeling off scores of 52, 47 and 36 as Sutton’s Joe Garland (R60) levelled the clash.

That sent the match to a final frame, which Consti’s Steve Spencer (R100) won to seal a 5-2 victory for his side.

Elsewhere, Holbeach A were the big winners of the night as they romped to a 7-0 success at Gosberton A.

Their frame wins came from James Glover (R90), Colin Dodd (R40) and Ben Harding (R50) – with the latter pocketing a handsome 23 break.

Also on winning form were Gosberton B, who edged out hosts Pyramid B 5-2 on the Bourne baize.

Marcus Pell (O10), who made a 26 break, and James Waterfall (R50) were the Gosberton frame winners. A 23 break in a frame win from Martin O’Connor (R20) was the Pyramid highlight.

Also winners on the night were Consti A, who picked off visitors Pyramid A 5-2.

Results: Crowland B 5 Donington 2 (573-483); Long Sutton 2 Consti B 5 (484-555); Gosberton A 0 Holbeach A 7 (486-600); Pyramid B 2 Gosberton B 5 (459-572); Consti A 5 Pyramid A 2 (aggregate unavailable).
