Billiards round-up: Holbeach C shine to seal title with whitewash win

Red-hot Holbeach C clinched the Spalding and District Billiards League title with an emphatic victory on the final round of fixtures.

They held a narrow one-point advantage over rivals Crowland A going into Monday night’s matches – so they knew that a maximum victory over host Pyramid B would see them crowned champions.

And that’s exactly what they did, roaring to a 7-0 victory in Bourne to clinch the crown.

Ben Harding (R60) got the ball rolling with a 200-195 victory over Maurice Phillipson (R60), before James Glover (R90) saw off Martin O’Connor (R10) 200-104 to edge them closer to the title.

That gave Colin Dodd (R50) the chance to secure the title by beating Darrell Read (R40) – and he duly obliged, taking the frame 200-169.

Second-placed Crowland A did all they could as they defeated Holbeach B 5-2, but they finish the season three points off the pace.

Elsewhere, Donington finished in third position after a 5-2 home victory over Gosberton A .

In what was a tight tussle, Jim Thompson (R50) made a 31 and an unfinished 31 to see off Norman Gookey (R80) in the final frame.

There was a tight tussle between club-mates Consti C and Consti B, which the latter shaded 4-3. Stewart Davies (R30) starred with a 21 break for the beaten C side.

At the foot, Consti A ensured they didn’t finish bottom with a super 7-0 victory over Long Sutton.

That was, despite a 50 break from Sutton’s Mick Cooper (O180).
