Bikers group help keep area’s roads safer

This week’s nominee of the week for the Pride of South Holland Awards are the South Lincolnshire Advanced Motorcyclists.

The group have been nominated for the Bakkavor Local Charity Champion Award.

Originally set up as a Boston-based car group, a lottery grant in 2002 led to the setting up of the motorbike session.

They hold sessions across South Lincolnshire, including in Holbeach, Sutton Bridge and Spalding.

There’s seven volunteer observers trained to Institute of Advanced Motorists standards who mentor new members.

The person who nominated the group said: “Over the 36 years the group has produced hundreds of advanced drivers and riders making a valuable contribution to road safety in South Lincolnshire and they are very proud of that fact.

“The volunteers who themselves took the training are now giving back to the community by giving their valuable time and effort into making safer riders.”

Those that pass the couse and IAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider test become full members of the IAM. There’s 90 at the current time.

As well as the courses The South Lincolnshire Advanced Motorists put on a lot of social meetings including ride outs, quizzes and meals.

They also regularly put on road safety talks for a wide variety of organisations.

Both the social events and some of the training elements have continued online through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The nominator continued: “This group are amazing.

“I have never known such a devoted, dedicated group or hard working people who all give so much of their time to South Holland and beyond to try to make our roads safer.

“They totally deserve to win an award.

“There is nothing that is too much trouble for them and time is not an issue for such a great team.”
