Big Lidl plans for new town store

LIDL has submitted plans for a new supermarket in Spalding.

It wants to build a bigger store off Bourne Road at the corner with Monks House to replace its current Winsover Road location.
If passed, it will cover 2,184sqm of which 1,357 would be the sales area, There would also be 120 car parking spaces.
Application documents also state the firm wants to create new footpaths to the site.
A World War II pillbox is on the land and it is designated a heritage asset. The planning documents state LIDL will incorporate it into proposed landscaping and put up signage ‘to promote its presence’.
The documents also show how the store would work adjacent to a new school which is planned for the site next to it as part of the South and East Lincolnshire Local Plan.
A spokesman for Lidl, said: “The new development represents a multi-million-pound investment and will allow the discounter to operate at the latest specifications. The larger 1,35sqm sales area will support growing local demand. It will create more than 25 new local jobs, while all existing store colleagues will transfer to the new location.
“To optimise efficiency and sustainability, the new supermarket will incorporate solar panels designed to provide 25 per cent of the site’s energy needs.”
Andrew Hodgkinson, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “We have proudly served the Spalding community for 27 years.
“Our current site can no longer accommodate the growing local demand. We are now submitting plans to relocate to a larger, modern store on Bourne Road.
“This multi-million-pound investment guarantees our long-term presence in the area. It will provide our customers with an upgraded shopping experience and new local jobs. We look forward to receiving a decision from South Holland District Council in due course.”
The firm also has a store in Holbeach Road in Spalding which opened in 2019.
