On only his third weekend taking part competitively in the sport of banger racing, a Spalding man’s first ever win has seen him crowned a national champion.
Harry Hart took a commanding first place in the Rookie Bangers English Championship at Skegness on Easter Sunday.
The 22-year-old has only recently taken up the motor racing where contact between cars is a vital part of the sport.
He’d only raced in two weekends before taking on last weekend’s national championship.
In the first race Harry needed to finish in the top half of the 35 cars to qualify for the final, something he did comfortably by coming third.
The ten-lap final saw him take the lead early on before coming home to win by shy of half a lap.
“It’s great, especially after going into the weekend without any expectations,” said Harry who has always been fascinated by cars. “It’s the first race I’ve ever won.
“I didn’t think I’d be getting near the front.
“I’ve a mate who does it and he persuaded me to give it a go.
“I got a scrap car with no MOT, modified it to get up to standard, putting in a roll cage and it was a case of taking it out on track.
“It’s a tough sport and can get quite rough but it’s a really good experience.”
Now Harry’s setting his sights on potential world title.
“It’s just about enjoying ourselves and getting more experience,” he continued. “I’ve only raced at Skegness so far so it will be good to race elsewhere.
“There’s a world finals taking place in Ipswich so I might try and attend that.”
