Back-to-back table tennis titles for brilliant Bladerunners duo

Bladerunners retained their Spalding and District Table Tennis League (sponsored by Vital Recruitment) Division One title on the final scheduled fixture night of the season.

The Blades cruised past JDM 5-0, their fifth whitewash of the season so far, to clinch their crown.

With one match to finish they now cannot be caught and Tomascz Dobrzyn and Dave Gibson add another title to their trophy cabinet.

Despite it being the final night for games, there are still seven matches to be completed across the divisions.

Staying in the top flight, South Holland confirmed second place, and Blades’ win, when they had a 3-2 victory over Haz Beans.

Richard Hammond scored a double, but Beans had come back from two down until Hammond’s second settled matters.

One From The Past also won 3-2 against Defenders, who once again lived up to their name with the match including three five-enders.

Dave Moore took two for the winners, while Jean White and Alan Fear won one each.

At the foot of the table, Outsiders confirmed their advantage over JAG by taking a 2-0 lead and now cannot be caught by their opponents.

In Division Two, Hope For The Best and Castle Sports both have two matches to complete – and the title race is still wide open.

Castle need three points to force a count back of results, but made a good start when Guntars Briedes took two in the unfinished match between the two.

Meanwhile, Insidious made up some ground with a 3-2 win over Casey’s Pingers.

Mick Nurse produced another fine double for Pingers, but Gary Simpson and Clive Shardlow proved too strong in the other games.

Pingers also went down to Mine’s A Pint, where Jeremy Hitcham and Andrew Hay were too experienced for their junior pairing, taking all the games.

Pinters also completed a 5-0 win over Saunter Together, a match started the week before.

Earlier in the evening, Saunter had done better against A Win for a Curry when Rod Bain took a double. But they still went down 3-2.

Also earlier, Dobrzyn had retained the Val Mackey Doubles title when he and Nurse had defeated Phil Coote and Shardlow 11-9, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6.

The last quarter final of the Roy Gibson was also decided, with Stuart Duffill (on 12) defeating James Coote (25) 29-31, 31-28, 31-30. The winner meets James Gibson (7).

Tonight (Wednesday) sees the remaining individual titles decided and the final official week is free for unfinished ties and the Guardian Cup final, though it looks as though the committee may have to extend the season by a week.
