Back-to-back Spalding titles for Grimwood

V SPORT

Andy Grimwood is Spalding Golf Club 2014 men’s strokeplay champion once again after winning the 36-hole Tester Salver competition with a super 143 gross total.

He retained this trophy after recording a gross 75 in the morning round, followed by a superb 68 in the afternoon.

That was enough to see Grimwood edge out Simon Richardson (74+70=144) by a solitary shot at the Surfleet course.

Just off the pace in third was James Crampton (78+72=150), who finished level with young Ollie Mitchell (74+76=150), after both carded 150.

Those four, along with Drew Warnes (152), Keith Hearne (152), Mark Cooley (154) and Lloyd Chatham (154), will compete for the Landale Scragg club matchplay championship later in the season.

The Square, awarded for having the best nett score in the 0-17 handicap range, was won by Calum Lewis (78-11=67) with a nett 67.

The Plaque, for the lowest gross score in the 18-28 handicap section, was won by Roy Foden with a 91, while the Circle, the best nett score in the same category, was won by Andrew Elfleet (92-26=66) with a nett 66.

These four trophies all hold premium bonds which each winner will benefit from if drawn during their winning year.

  • The in-form Ian Ford (87-21=66) set the pace at the first round of the Lincolnshire Free Press trophy competition. He will take a one-stroke lead into the final round in August after scoring a nett 66.

Rob Stimson (82-15=67) holds second spot with a nett 67 followed by Dan Hines (70-1=69) with a nett 69.

Other leading scores: 71 – Wayne Flowers, Phil Wakefield, Gary Palmer; 72 – Richard Parker, Phil Packard, Simon Rothwell, Raich Growdridge; 73 – Jerry Philo, Phil Tweddell, John Carrott, Simon Richardson; 74 – Chas Lacey.

  • The mixed open day entries were well up on last year with 27 teams of four competing from 22 different clubs, ranging from Macclesfield to Grimsby.

It was the home club’s Chris and Elaine Hancock, Wayne Wallace and Mags McArdle came out on top with a superb 113 points.

A quartet from Toft Hotel Golf Club placed second with 109 points, while Max and Anne Ellis, Graham Hutchings and Sue Orwin claimed third place on countback with 108 poits – just edging out a team from Elton Furze.

Max Ellis was also successful in the 2’s competition, but the real winner was the three captains’ charities, for which £276 was raised on the day.
