Protection and surveillance zones have been put in place after avian bird flu was confirmed at a commercial poultry premises near Donington.
Officers from Lincolnshire Trading Standards will be visiting properties within the 3km protection zone while a 10km surveillance zone has also been set up by central government’s Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
It has not stated the exact location where the contaminated birds have been identified.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said that avian influenza is primarily a disease of birds and the risk to the general public’s health is very low.
Government guidance says you should not touch or pick up any dead or visibly sick birds that you find.
Though there are no known cases of dogs contracting avian flu but those who walk their dog within the protection zone are asked to keep them on a lead and away from dead birds.
If you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report them online or to the Defra helpline on 03459 33 55 77.
