Auction date for fire damaged hall

A landmark Spalding building disused after a fire in 2021 is due to go under the hammer.

The former Regent Bingo Hall, on Westlode Street, was due to re-open after refurbishment in May 2021, but a blaze ripped through the building’s interior.
An electrical fault was blamed for the fire which broke out on May 14.
It had been owned by Majestic Bingo since 2014 and was a popular venue.
It had previously been the Savoy Cinema with 1,500 seating capacity and was the largest in the county when it opened in 1937.
Now the building, which is in the town’s conservation area, is to be auctioned and has a guide price of £250,000 to £270,000.
Described as an ‘imposing building’ the venue is being auctioned on January 30 by SDL Property Auctions.
“This was once a splendid building that was a real asset to the town of Spalding and it has been disused and unloved for over three years,” said Andrew Parker, auctioneer and partner.
“It would be great to see an imaginative mixed-use scheme bring the site back to life, perhaps retaining the original 1930s art deco facade.
“Spalding has so much going for it, with its historic town centre, picturesque river views and surrounding Fenland countryside,” he added.
The company has sought pre-application advice from South Holland District Council and said a mixed use, with ground floor commercial and flats above and to the rear would be ‘generally supported.’
A full application would need to be made and, if possible, the front of the building retained and incorporated into a new scheme.
“Although structurally stable and potentially capable of being brought back into use, it is envisaged that the property represents an excellent redevelopment opportunity for a mixed use scheme,” say the property particulars.
The 15,000sq ft building is one of more than 170 due to be auctioned by SDL, part of Eddisons.
