ASB issues at two Spalding town centre spots

Calls for action on anti-social behaviour in two areas of Spalding have been raised again.

Both the long standing issues at Abbey Passage and problems around the Sheep Market toilets were brought to South Holland District Council last week.

Coun James Le Sage questioned why homeless people living down Abbey Passage had not been moved or the area cleaned.

“I make a point of going down there,” he said. “There’s still human excrement against the wall and I believe one of the cabinet said was going to deal with the issue.

“While I appreciate some people don’t accept the offered help, Abbey Passage has become a no-go area for a lot of residents.

“Why should they walk down a passage where there’s excrement on the walls, which stinks of urine?”

Council leader Nick Worth responded by telling councillors that the issue was on private property owned by Hill Furniture Store.

“Anti-social behaviour officers have been round on numerous occasions to get them to clear it up.,” he said.

“They’ve promised on several occasions they would.

“The first was to get it cleared up by January 1, but that clearly didn’t happen.

“Every time they say they’re going to do it they turn round and say ‘we can’t do it now as we’re too busy’.

“We can’t enforce on it as it’s on private property.

“All we can do is try and keep it as clean as we possibly can. We’ll continue to put on pressure to do that.”

The Voice approached Hills for a comment but had not received one at the time of going to press.

Coun Manzur Hasan used the same meeting to bring up anti-social behaviour around the Sheep Market toilets which, he claimed, people were too scared to use because of people loitering around them.

“I appreciate the recent improvements in the toilets, but I’ve received so many complaints from the residents that they can’t use them as they’re scared,” he said, stating that the only recently installed bike ranks nearby had been vandalised. “I personally visited myself and I saw no enforcement people, no police presence.

“Why is there no visible response on the ground?

“Given the situation we should be considering urgent action rather than delaying further.”

Coun Worth argued that should be a police issue and that the future ‘hot spot’ policing shifts will see regular policing in those area. Calls for action on anti-social behaviour in two areas of Spalding have been raised again.
