Artistic revamp for Holbeach cemetery chapels’ windows

A community arts project is under way to revamp the boarded-up windows at Holbeach cemetery chapels.

Efforts are being made to repair and regenerate the monument chapels to create a community focused space.
While a steering committee applies for funding, arts programme Transported is helping with some artistic care.

The project will create four bespoke photographic murals, which will take the shape of the windows and cover up the wooden boards.
The design will be colours, patterns and shapes created using light boxes and cellophane sheets, inspired by stained glass windows.

Initial workshops have been held at William Stukeley and Holbeach Primary schools. An open workshop is taking place at the chapels in the Park Road cemetery on Easter Monday. The workshop is free and suitable for all ages – just drop in any time between 10am and 2pm.

Artist Steven Hatton, of Electric Egg, has been commissioned as part of Transported’s On Your Doorstep project, in which areas are nominated for an artistic spruce-up.

He said: “We hope that these designs will reinvigorate the appearance of the chapel and that the windows will reflect the passion, interests and creativity of the people of Holbeach through the small vignettes they have created.
“This project is for everyone in the community and I hope everyone will take the opportunity to come along and get involved.”

The finished artwork will be unveiled on May 16.
