All change in Spalding and District Table Tennis League’s top flight on night of big wins

Clear wins were the order of the day in Spalding and District Table Tennis League Division One last week – and not always in top versus bottom matches.

Not only that, but at the end of the night not one team was in the same position it had been in at the start of proceedings.

Bladerunners dropped to fifth after going down 5-0 to Jokers, who are the new leaders.

Sasha Martin and Phil Coote both took doubles in their singles, in three and four ends respectively, while Guntars Briedes stepped in to support Martin in the doubles.

South Holland moved into second place following a 4-1 win over Outsiders.

John Gilbert won both his singles for Holland and secured the doubles with Jean White, while Richard Hammond added their fourth. Piotr Olstowska came from behind to win for Outsiders’ point.

At the foot of the table a full-strength Nets and Edges saw off Mine’s a Pint 5-0 to move up two places ahead of their opponents.

James Gibson and Reece Kerry did the damage, though they were fortunate in the doubles – coming from four points down in the final end to win with a net cord.

Finally, JDM are sitting in third spot after winning against Aches and Pains by the same score.

Phil Chandler and Daniel Dorey took the points for the winners, though Dorey was forced to the fourth in both his games and the doubles went to the fifth.

In Division Two, a top-of-the-table clash saw MatDuf come from behind against chasers Hurricane Brothers to take the match 3-2.

The four singles were shared with each player winning one, but the doubles proved crucial with MatDuf leading by two before being pegged back and then winning in the fifth.

The brothers drop to third behind Skidlids who were too powerful for Castle Sports, taking all five games in three ends.

To their credit Sports did force two deuces in the match.

  • The Spalding and District Table Tennis League now have a leaflet available outlining all the matches this season, despite the lack of a sponsor which would normally cover the cost of the handbook.
