Alan and Gail have wind in their sails at Welland Yachting Club’s latest event.

Gail Follington was at the double and Alan Cox also recorded a win and two second places in Welland Yachting Club’s latest regatta on Sunday.

With a reasonable breeze the first race of the day was number five in the Morning Points series.

Cox made the most of fine start to get an early lead in his Laser Radial closely followed by the faster Scorpion of Will Cook and crew Emma Hill.

Neal Tack and crew Rebecca Slator in their Graduate were third while Follington opted to use her daughter’s Topper in the windy conditions.

Cook and Hill took the lead on the water with Cox conscious of a favourable handicap trying to keep just close enough.

Follington took the offer of a single lap time finish whilst the others had began their second lap.

Cook and Hill would maintain the lead on the water although they would be pushed into second by Cox by handicap. Follington would get third with her split lap time.

Gail Follington

The afternoon saw the start of a new race series Commodores Points.

With two more entrants joining, the gusts caught out a couple of boats prior to the start of race one.

Both recovered in time for the start.

With the lead boat of Burton getting tangled in the many weeds Cook and Hill managed to pass to lead only to become entangled themselves.

Burton extended his lead before the downwind leg where Cook used his spinnaker to full effect but he was unable to overtake Burton for third.

With the strong gusts challenging the larger sailed boats Follington’s choice of a Topper with it’s more than favourable handicap would prove to have been justified once time corrected and she took the win.

After a short break race two of the series got underway with the wind having now strengthened.

Burton edged out a lead from Cook and Hill.

Holland capsized in the strong winds allowing the other three boats past.

The first lap return leg would see disaster strike Cook & Hill when their gib foot tether would break forcing early retirement.

Although again Burton would be first home handicaps would see him drop to third with Follington again taking the win from Cox.
