Mother and daughter help rescue bus crash children

The teacher who assisted when a bus of schoolchildren crashed into a dyke has praised her daughter for her actions in the rescue effort.

As reported last week, teacher Lucy Mawer was first on the scene on Friday, December 6 – her birthday – when a bus left the road in Moulton Seas End.

Lucy, who is head of plumbing at University Academy Holbeach, was with her Y11 daughter Franceska Parr, who assisted.

Lucy said: “I would like to say how proud I am. It was Franceska who called the emergency services whilst I dived in!

“She followed their instructions over the phone on checking people, whilst reporting back to the person in the call centre keeping her calm all of the time.

“She then kept students company whilst they were waiting for their parents.”

Emergency services attend the crashed bus in Moulton Seas End last Friday.

Lucy has also praised the students involved in the crash.

“I would just like to say how commendable the children were from the moment we opened the emergency door, to me getting in the bus and helping all the children out.

“They all listened to instructions and supported each other in such a way
that it made the whole terrifying event more manageable and I’m so thankful no one was hurt.”

Meanwhile, a mother who has campaigned for a ban on HGVs on the road after her daughter was in two school bus crashes in the same spot in three years – has called Lincolnshire County Council’s accident recording “concerning” after the council didn’t have record of a number of traffic incidents on Loose Gate Road.

A County Council spokesman explained that accident records for county roads are collected by Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership.

A Partnership spokesman explained incidents in which no-one is injured and there is no damage to a third party do not require reporting.

Reporting also relies on the police passing on information. Friday’s crash was recorded: a “slight” injury to the driver and “minor injuries” to children.
