Contrasting fortunes for Tulips and Tigers

Spalding United earned an impressive 1-0 win over Boston United on Tuesday night – but South Holland neighbours Holbeach United were pasted 5-0 at Gainsborough Trinity.

Jordan Thomas struck 11 minutes from time to earn the Tulips their second pre-season friendly success in four days, while Paul Beasley, Conor Higginson (2),  Darryn Stamp and Grant Roberts struck to tame the Tigers.

Tulips chief Pat Rayment played down his team’s victory after the final whistle, saying: “It’s nice to get the result in terms of boosting confidence, but pre-season counts for little.”

Co-Holbeach chief Graham Drury was also unconcerned by the severity of the Tigers’ loss. He said: “You learn more from a 5-0 loss than you do in a 4-0 win against Louth Town.”

Meanwhile, Rayment confirmed after the game that left back Gareth Jellyman had left the club for “personal reasons.”

More from both camps in Thursday’s Spalding Voice.
